Prizes
The Quake Prize presents awards in three separate categories, Journal
Article, Opinion, and Photo Essay.
The Journal Article category is awarded to the top submission to the East Asia Forum annual publication, as judged by the selection committee and consulted faculty in the area. Articles ranging from all subjects are welcome as long as they fall within the grounds of that year's call for submissions. Please refer to the East Asia Forum site for the official call for submissions and submission guidelines.

-The awarded article will be published in the East Asia Forum with distinction.
-2009 will be the first year this prize is awarded.
The Opinion category is awarded to the top Opinion piece (op. ed.) submission to the Asia Pacific Reader during that year's publication cycle*, as judged by a member of the Journalism faculty. Please refer to the Asia Pacific Reader submission guidelines concerning Opinion pieces.
-The Opinion category is a gift award.
-The awarded article will be published in the East Asia Forum with distinction.
-2009 will be the first year this prize is awarded.
The Photo Essay category is awarded to the top Photo Essay submission to the Asia Pacific Reader during that year's publication cycle*, as judged by a member of the Fine Arts faculty. Distinct from the Asia Pacific Reader Flickr group, photos essays must be submitted to directly to the Asia Pacific Reader for consideration. -The awarded article will be published in the East Asia Forum with distinction.

All Quake Prizes are to be announced in the autumn of the following year, coinciding with the publication of the East Asia Forum and the Asian Institute welcome back event.
Submission and awards are not required to originate from University of Toronto students. In accordance with publication in the East Asia Forum and Asia Pacific Reader, the Quake Prize is open to all students from around the world without preference.
* The Asia Pacific Reader Publication cycle runs September to August, encompassing the academic year as well as the following summer term, considered to be the prime independent research opportunity and writing period. Chu Scholarship submissions will be considered during the year that they are published, rather than the year that they are submitted, ie a submission from July 2008 that is published in Winter of 2009 will be considered for the 2008-2009 publication cycle, and would be awarded in September of 2009.
